Nevus (plural nevi) is the medical term of a mole. Whether it is necessary for nevi to be removed depends on the size, location, and perceived risk).
Small- (less than 2 cm) and medium- (2-20 cm) sized nevi are usually harmless but can be removed for aesthetic reasons. Removing these moles involves a simple excision to cut out the affected area and stitch together the surrounding skin.
Removing larger nevi (20 cm or bigger) is a more involved process. Depending on the size of the nevi, it may need to be cut out in sections. The skin may need to be replaced either through a skin graft or tissue expansion. Laser treatment may also be an option.
