Port-Wine Stains

Port-wine stains can range in color from pale pink to dark purple and can grow in size as a person grows into adulthood. These vascular birthmarks are most often found on the face, neck, arms, or legs.

Port-wine stains do not usually require treatment. Some people, however, may choose to have them faded for cosmetic reasons. These birthmarks can be lightened or removed by using a pulse dye laser.

Laser and light treatments work by utilizing heat to damage the abnormal blood vessels. The treatment causes the blood vessel to close and disintegrate, helping to shrink, fade, or potentially remove port-wine stains. Most people need several treatments depending on their skin color, location, and size.

Following the procedure, your skin will be more sensitive. Avoid unprotected exposure to the sun by wearing sunscreen and wearing protective clothing.
