Venous lakes are small, dark blue or purple papules on the skin. These papules are soft, slightly elevated, and compressible. They commonly form on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, neck, lips, and the back of the hand of elderly people. These spots are usually painless, so treatment is largely cosmetic.
There are multiple ways to treat a venous lake including laser ablation, liquid nitrogen cryosurgery, and light electrocautery. Laser treatment can require multiple treatments to see results. Surgical excision is rarely necessary and can leave a scar.
