Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a procedure that removes blockages in the sinuses. It can be used to relieve symptoms related to sinusitis, septal deviations or turbinate hypertrophy, and nasal polyps. These blockages can cause sinusitis, which is where the sinus mucous membranes swell and become blocked. This can cause pain, drainage, and difficulty breathing.

Benefits of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery can improve the drainage of the sinuses and improve airflow through the nose. Other benefits include:
· Reduction of the number and severity of sinus infections
· Improvement in symptoms associated with sinusitis
· Improvement of airflow through the nose
· Improvement of sense of smell

Usually, the patient is under general anesthesia when this outpatient procedure is performed. The surgeon will use an endoscope, which is a thin camera rod with a light at the end, to provide visualization and magnification of the sinus tissue. Specialized instruments can be used to safely remove causes of sinus blockages like nasal polyps and scar tissue.
